As you look around, the world may currently feel unfamiliar and off. Amid health concerns and cancelled gigs, One could surely go down the rabbit hole of negativity and never find their way back. How can we take matters into our own hands and control our attitudes, rather than letting our attitudes control us?
So, how does one stay positive when something really throws us off? Was that tour that you've been dreaming about since you were small now cancelled? Was it something smaller - Did you lose one of your very favorite drumsticks to play live with? Everything is relative - Remember this! It's okay to feel what you feel. Embrace it, recognize it and move on.
Life is at times challenging for everyone, to say the least. We are all fighting our own particular battles. For a musician, sometimes this can be even more amplified. A life of the unknown adventure has it’s flipside and usually before it’s glamorous, it’s frightening. In a lifestyle when you’re constantly getting turned down and denied from gigs, collabs or A&R’s, it’s easy to become frustrated and disenfranchised. When this happens, take a break and do something else that’s fun and easy for you, like a day at the beach!
Attempting to spin a negative situation is a healthy and productive way for you to shake off ill scenarios, You're almost gifting yourself the freedom of not being bound by that which happens to you. You're staying in control of the cause & reaction that life throws us all.
When staying positive, it’s important to take care of your body and mind. This is the environment that you live in and negative situations will simply weave in and out.
Did you know? "Scientists have studied the muscles needed for both facial expressions, and to do a small smile generally uses 10 muscles; a small frown uses 6. On average, a smile uses 12 and a frown 11. However, since humans tend to smile a lot, these muscles are stronger. A frown may be slightly more effort to produce."
It's important to understand that there will be days when you just want to give up, let loose, sleep in or scream under a pillow. You cannot be invincible all the time. Even superheroes need sleep. Don't just attempt to ignore bad news or bad feelings. If you do this, they will boil up and over and soon become mismanage-able. What was once a small leak could sink the whole ship. None of us want that and we don't want that for you!
Keep perspective. This will make or break you. When bad things happen, like getting a $84 parking citation, don’t let it ruin your day. Imagine the negative runoff trail that comes from you going into the rest of your day with a bad attitude. You may sulk and complain all day, only to ignore the beautiful moments that are happening around you. Maintaining perspective on small events that are out of your control will assist you in choosing your battles.
Your mood not only affects your way of life but others around you. It affects the strangers you come into contact with in the smallest of ways, your family members, your significant other. You'd be amazed at how much of an imprint a sincere "How are you?" could leave a stranger. You may be the one drop of sunshine in their day. Remain as this even when you're only getting negativity thrown your way.
Have you heard that quote by Mahatma Gandhi? "You must be the change you want to see in the world". Despite how others act, if you act as you know you should, there will be a ripple effect rather rapidly. You cannot wait for others to provide the platform of peace, you must take matters into your own hands and light the torch of change.
