Recording While Traveling

Despite the fact that most of us are currently stuck inside our homes, having amped up our home recording studios, it may provide a little bit of inspiration for you to plan for the future ahead.

Over the years, you may have heard of artists saying that they work on their new albums on the tour bus or in their hotels while touring their previous work of art. On a smaller scale, perfecting your recording process and setup while traveling can come in handy when you find yourself out of town, be it a few days or months on end.

Recording While Traveling_pitstop.jpgWhether you’re a professional musician or you’ve simply gotten bit by the creative bug, you’ll thank yourself later for having a little “to-go” bag with your musical equipment essentials, that way when inspiration strikes or when you’re newest collaborator needs a quick harmony for a song that they’re planning to release off the cuff - you’re ready and the quality is top notch.

Timbaland, one of the most beloved producers of all time, is known for his speciality mobile recording studio which doubles as a tour bus. This acoustically treated space houses a full console, the most epic speaker setup and has successfully recorded some of today’s biggest hits.

Both Lil Wayne and Drake are notorious for recording their tracks in hotel rooms, including Wayne’s “How To Love” and Drake’s “So Far Gone”. Despite the fact that this can bring some trouble into the mix for the engineer and mastering process, we’re behind the inspiration that can arise from recording in a temporary, gorgeous, unlikely space.

If you aren’t ready to take it to the Timbaland level of hi-fi recording in motion, then we suggest that you invest in a less fancy version of your typical Audio Interface, Microphone and Headphones. This way, if something happens to them, you won’t be totally devastated. If you’re truly on the go often, it may be wise to invest in a nice gear setup that you can take on the road with you. We do suggest that you leave your speciality mics at home, as accidents do happen when you least expect it.

If you find yourself stuck and unable to cart around so much equipment, don’t forget that if you have a Smartphone, you can download an innovative little app called Four Track App. This allows you to input monitors and get four nice crisp tracks of audio. All you’ll need on this one is a nice pair of headphones.

The joys of getting your creativity to be ready on the fly really shines in situations where you’d likely be left in the dust, with ideas and opportunities fading in the distant past. Your inspiration is already thanking you from the future.
